Ohio Municipal Courts have restricted jurisdiction that allows them to only hear certain types of cases. For some types of cases, like felony offenses, only preliminarily hearings are heard in the Municipal Court.

The Judges preside over civil, criminal, and traffic cases which then conduct jury or bench trials. In jury trials, the judges interpret the law and the jury determines the factual matters. In non-jury trials, the Judges must interpret the law and determine the facts. The Judges conduct criminal arraignments and preliminary hearings on felony cases, set bond on criminal charges, issue search warrants, and can then impose sentences when a Defendant is found guilty of a traffic or criminal charge. The Judges oversee civil cases where the amount in controversy is $15,000.00 or less.
